Facilities

There are many places that we can go to get a workout. With the many options available, it can get rather confusing for one to choose when deciding on a facility to train at.

1. COMMERCIAL GYMS

Commercial gyms are large, equipment-intensive setups that cater to the mass fitness market. These giants of fitness generally need a large initial injection of capital to equip and maintain. The commercial gym model is built on memberships and often has clubs in multiple countries. With multiple locations, commercial gyms offer the convenience of location.
Commercial gyms need to offer a variety of gym equipment and sports training options to a diverse clientele. Clients may vary extensively in their knowledge and levels of fitness. Designated training areas include group fitness studios, gym machines such as cardio, plate-loaded and selectorised machines, free-weights, swimming and functional training.
One key difference about commercial gyms is the gym memberships are often require a certain time commitment to get the best value. Membership terms and conditions are not as flexible as the boutique gyms but you get a bigger variety of services, locations and equipment at commercial gyms.

Examples:

  1. Fitness First
  2. Pure Fitness
  3. Virgin Active

2. MEDIUM-SIZED/FRANCHISE GYMS

These are similar to commercial gyms but are smaller in size. The sizes of these medium sized gyms are in between the commercial and studio. Some offers gym access and some offer choreographed classes. These gyms can be either an international brand or a local fitness brand.
Memberships terms and conditions are rather mixed here depending on individual companies. Some are flexible while some are not. Similar to commercial gyms, you’ll need to commit to a certain time period to get the best value membership.

One thing for certain is the consistency in the brands’ standards in terms of their service standards. One can expect the same level of service and quality regardless of branch they visit for a particular brand.

3. BOUTIQUE FITNESS STUDIOS

Boutique fitness studios have been exploding on the fitness scene for several years. In contrast to commercial gyms, these fitness studios offer a more personal touch to their members’ fitness experience. They are smaller, focus on one or two fitness areas, and some are class focused (from Yoga to HIIT). These studios offer exclusivity in the form of limited memberships, group exercise classes and personal training. Additional on-site services, such as a dietician and physiotherapist, add value to a comprehensive solution.

Modern studios may consist of a variety of gym equipment options including selected cardio, plate-loaded or selectorised machines, and free-weights. The popularity of cross training has brought rigging options, barbells, kettlebells and plyo-boxes into the functional fitness space, making these studios versatile and multidimensional. You may find a mix of accessible, popular equipment pieces, like treadmills, rowers and bikes, while also catering to specialised sports conditioning equipment favoured by some personal trainers.
